The present study was performed to determine the impact of abuse experience as well as the mediating effects of self-esteem on the suicidal ideation of the elderly. From across the country, 737 people aged 65 or older were selected as the subjects of this study and, by using the data collected from them. According to the multiple regression analysis based on Baron and Kenny`s 4 steps, we found statistical significance and mediated effect from the path of variables. resulting ultimately in the following outcomes£ºFirst, abuse experience of the elderly was found to have direct influence upon their suicidal ideation positively (+); second, abuse experience of the elderly was found to have direct influence upon their self-esteem negatively (-); third, it became obvious that the lower the self-esteem of the elderly remains, the stronger their suicidal ideation gets; and fourth, abuse experience of the elderly turned out to exercise impact upon their suicidal ideation with self-esteem functioning as a mediator. Since it is made known that abuse experience of the elderly exercises direct impact upon their suicidal ideation and self-esteem of the elderly is getting lower as their experience of abuse increases, intensifying by thus their suicidal ideation, it has become clear that self-esteem of the elderly exerts partial mediating effects on the relationship between their abuse experience and suicidal ideation. On the basis of these study results, it was discussed how to map out the practical and political intervention measures to prevent the elderly from committing suicide and to promote their mental health instead.
